The Music Pack by Ron Van Der Meer and Michael Berkeley
This book is definitely one of the best books I have ever read. With its awesome 3-D pop-ups,this book is surely a book that everyone in your family would enjoy. Even if you are four year of age there are still things to do in this book! It has pop-up instruments that you can actually play! The book tells you about world music, and also comes with a CD full of classcal music. It includes timelines of various musical masters throughout the centuries. This book is packed with so much information that if you were to read it you would instantly become educated in how to use instruments and how music is created. I highly recommend this book to any music lover, or music teacher. I have been playing two instruments for about three years, and this book is just as fun as playing the real thing!

On Berkeley

ON BERKELEY
This book is not only a clear exposition of Bishop Berkeley's philosophy, but makes the strong case that Berkeley's "to be is to be perceived" is not a silly or trivial position as many like to write it off as, but rather a serious account of "reality" and more economical that most theories which take physical reality as an intuitive given.

I used the book as a text in a course on Modern Philosophy, making Berkeley my "featured philosopher" and it worked well. I learned a great deal and my students did as well.

I recommend the book for such courses, or for anyone curious to see and evaluate a strong claim that Berkeley's immaterialism is a persuasive and reasonable theory.

I didn't come away from Bruce Umbaugh's very readable book convinced that my world of perception is not undergirded by a physical reality, but I did come away knowing that I'd never again approach Berkeley with some smug sense of superiority over this "crazy view." Umbaugh makes one sit up and take note of Berkeley as one who deserves his place in early modern philosophy.

Outdoor Play: Teaching Strategies With Young Children (Early Childhood Education)
Published in Hardcover by Teachers College Pr (July, 2001)
Author: Jane Perry
Average review score:

Keen insight into why outdoor play is a significant
In Outdoor Play: Teaching Strategies With Young Children, research coordinator and teacher Jane Perry provides the reader with keen insight into why outdoor play is a significant (yet frequently overlooked) aspect of a young child's emotional, social, and physical development. Perry analyses play within a framework of "initiation, negotiation, and enactment", showing how teachers can effectively support self-directed pretend play. Perry's superbly presented text also connects and illustrates theories of play and children's culture. Outdoor Play is very strongly recommended for students of child development, playground supervisors, and preschool through grade school classroom teachers.

Principles of Human Knowledge and Three Dialogues
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (June, 1999)
Authors: George Berkeley and Howard Robinson
Average review score:

Esse est percipi aut percipere
Berkeley's principle, esse est percipi aut percipere, denies the bustance's existence and assents that all things are only minds or ideas perceived by minds. This is the starting point for the idealism and all this is exposed in his first work, the "Principles of human knowledge" (1710). Since his first work was met with disfavour, he resposed to his critics with his second work, the "Three dialogues" between Hylas and Philonous (1713). This edition contains the two keys works and also has an introduction wich examines Berkeley's arguments.

Author: Richard A. Lupoff
Average review score:

Loved it. Loved it. Loved it.
Richard Lupoff is in a class by himself with the Hobart Lindsey/Marvia Plum mystery series. This one, as with his previous novels, did not disappoint. I understand that Mr. Lupoff is currently writing the last book in this series. Let's just hope that he gets these two star-crossed lovers back together.

Saicho: The Establishment of the Japanese Tendai School (Berkeley Buddhist Studies Series, Vol. 7)
Published in Hardcover by U C Regents (September, 1984)
Author: Paul Groner
Average review score:

Definitive!
This Berkeley Buddhist series volume is the definitive work of the founder of Tendai Buddhism in Japan. This volume of the series steps you through the beginning of Saicho's life into his later years fighting for an ordination platform on Mount Hiei. Included are details concerning the rise of Tendai Buddhism away from the influential Buddhism of Nara. Saicho's views of the bodhisattva precepts and his wish to move away from the Hinayana goals of the Ssu fen lu precepts. This is a treasure of Buddhist history in the Heian period.

This work is a must for any serious Buddhist researcher. Critical for any Tendai researcher to read.

Science for the 21st Century
Published in Paperback by AEI Press (September, 1997)
Authors: Claude E. Barfield, University of California, and Berkeley
Average review score:

Excellent essays on modern science policy.
This book contains essays by six well known scholars in science policy. Each examines some aspect of the famous Bush report (The Endless Frontier)as it relates to today's problems in science and technology. Bush's book is not idealized--some see flaws, omissions, and contradictions. A must-read (as they say) for those interested in federal science budgets and policy.

The Seeds of Peace
Published in Hardcover by Barefoot Books (August, 1999)
Authors: Laura Berkeley and Alison Dexter
Average review score:

A book to keep forever!
This is the most amazing book! In a world where so many people rely on material possessions to make them happy, this book displays that happiness is in your heart and not in dollars and possessions. A person doesn't need to have the most "things" or live in the biggest house or have the most expensive car to be happy. One needs to be comfortable and at peace with themself to be happy. I have to say this is my most favorite children's book. I have purchased it for our school library and given it for many gifts. It is one to keep for a lifetime!
